We’ve made it out of the flight rounds and shit is getting real. Detailed results and the full bracket are available here. The voting for Round 5 is live in case you want to skip right to the emotional devastation of “Careless Whisper” versus “Angel of the Morning”.
I know this will come as good news to at least one participant: Phil Collins’ “Against All Odds” has met its demise by the hand of Mr. Robert Clark Seger and his “Night Moves”. The game has changed. We have 2 of our 2018 final four contenders still in the mix: Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” and George Michael’s “Careless Whisper”.
Flight 1: this ended in yet another tie, forcing a Cetera-on-Cetera 3-way matchup in Round 5
Flight 2: 90s Whitney beat 80s Whitney by a few votes
Flight 3: Billy Joel’s “Always A Woman” narrowly beat Sting and Dan Hill
Flight 4: Bob Seger reigned victorious and it wasn’t close.
Flight 5: Roxette’s campaign continues.
Flight 6: Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” won by the tied-for-largest margin in Round 4. (Some people might say that it was sweet retribution for Toni Braxton beating out Sheena Easton in Round 1. Ahem.)
Flight 7: “Endless Love” stays endless.
Flight 8: George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” won the 3-way matchup by a significant margin. For true Pillowheads, this was a tough call.
Flight 9: THE JUICE IS LOOSE. Sheryl Crow was not, in fact, strong enough.
Flight 10: Madonna put the kibosh on “Silver Springs” getting its due. In recognition of this valiant fight, please treat yourself to the hottest performance ever dedicated to film. This is one of a few times in which heterosexuality hasn’t been embarrassing.
Flight 11: The recent re-emergence of Tracy Chapman wasn’t enough to overcome Bob Seger.
Flight 12: Sade beat Elvis. Like, handily.
Flight 13: [something about a boombox overhead] Peter Gabriel demolished a banger duet. He couldn’t demolish this, though.
Flight 14: I can’t legally comment on anything that involves something superceding Prince.
Flight 15: I can comment on this one, but I won’t.
Flight 16: Peter Cetera doesn’t quit.
Round 5 is live! Happy madness, lovers.
